 SERAP Sues Nigeria Electoral Body, INEC Over Failure To Prosecute Electoral Offenders In Bayelsa, Kogi, Imo In the suit, SERAP argues that there should be accountability for the grave electoral offences in Kogi, Imo and Bayelsa states. The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has filed a lawsuit against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) "over the failure to arrest and prosecute suspected perpetrators of grave electoral offences in the recently concluded off-cycle governorship elections in Kogi, Imo and Bayelsa states." In the suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/1694/2023 filed last Friday at the Federal High Court in Abuja, SERAP is seeking "an order of mandamus to direct and compel INEC to probe the allegations of electoral offences including electoral violence, in the off-cycle governorship elections in Kogi, Imo and Bayelsa states".       The organisation is also seeking "an order of mandamus to compel INEC to promptly and effectiv

 Just In: Bye Elections, Rerun Elections to fill Legislative Vacancies may hold Feb 1 – INEC The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is setting its sights on Thursday, February 1st, 2024, as the potential date for a bye-election to fill the gaps in the state and federal legislatures. This follows the need to fill the vacancies left by court orders, resignations, and death. INEC chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, dropped the hint during a recent meeting with leaders of political parties. Professor Yakubu revealed that the courts, after the end of legal battles, instructed the commission to conduct rerun elections in 34 federal and state constituencies.  Ecobank secures $200 million loan to fund climate ambitions Ecobank Transnational Incorporated (ETI), a banking group based in Lomé, announced on Friday that it has signed an agreement to provide the lender with a $200 million sustainability-linked loan. Proparco, Norfund, FMO, DEG, and EFP are the five European Development Institutions that make up this group. The credit, which supports Ecobank Group's sustainability and climate strategy and includes a climate action plan, is reportedly the first of its kind given to a financial institution in sub-Saharan Africa.
