Forest stun Manchester United 2-1 to pile pressure on Ten Hag

Manchester United ended the 2023–24 season on a losing note, falling 2-1 to struggling Nottingham Forest at City Ground on Saturday in a Premier League game that only served to highlight the team's dismal performance.

After Forest's lead was established in the 64th minute by Nicolas Dominguez, Marcus Rashford equalized for United, and then Morgan Gibbs-White's late goal gave Forest their first victory over United since 1994, further inflicting pain on Erik ten Hag.

Following the loss, Ten Hag Man United's team dropped to seventh place in the Premier League and finished 2023 with a total of 21 losses in all competitions.

This was United's 14th loss in all competitions this year, and the year ended horribly for them. With the victory, Forest is now five points clear of the relegation zone in 15th position in the Premier League standings.

“What we are trying to do is to create an idea. The talent is there, so it’s the confidence to play,” said Forest manager Nuno, who replaced Steve Cooper earlier this month.

“It’s our responsibility in how we defend. But they have to believe in the idea. The spaces were there and it’s a credit to the players because we have only been here for 10 days and they are the ones really working very hard.”

Opta statistics show that Man United has lost nine of their first twenty league games in a season for the first time since 1989–1990. That is the same number of losses as they had in the entire 2022–2023 campaign.

On Christmas Eve, British entrepreneur and CEO of INEOS Sir Jim Ratcliffe paid about £1.3 billion for a 25% stake in United and will succeed the Glazer family as head of the team's football operations.

Dave Brailsford, head of sport at INEOS, and Sir Alex Ferguson, the former manager, were there at the City Ground when United lost to Forest for the first time since 1994.

However, tonight's outcome might prompt Ratcliffe to think about firing Ten Hag, even though Ten Hag claims that Ratcliffe wants to collaborate with him.
