The Eastern Regional Command of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) recorded a 10.77 percent decrease in fire outbreaks for 2022/2023. The report highlights a reduction from 650 cases in 2022 to 580 cases in 2023, covering various categories such as domestic, industrial, vehicular, commercial, institutional, and bushfires.
Assistant Chief Fire Officer Jennifer N.Y. Quaye, the Eastern Regional Commander, attributed the decline in institutional and bushfire incidents to enhanced fire safety education efforts by the regional command. Despite this improvement, there was an increase in domestic, industrial, and commercial fire outbreaks in 2023, possibly due to public non-compliance with best fire safety practices.
Ms. Quaye emphasized the region's commitment to intensifying fire safety education at lorry stations, schools, churches, and mosques. Initiatives include a door-to-door education campaign and leveraging social media platforms for effective communication. She urged the public to cooperate with fire personnel during the education process, emphasizing the importance of engaging qualified electricians, installing fire alarms, smoke detectors, and fire extinguishers for early fire detection.
The Regional Command assured the public of its preparedness to respond promptly to any emergency calls within its mandate.
