 President Tinubu Strongly Condemns Governor Fubara for Demolishing Rivers State House of Assembly Complex

President Bola Tinubu has reportedly expressed strong disapproval of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara for the demolition of the State House of Assembly Complex during a peace meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Monday, December 18.


Chaired by Tinubu, the meeting was attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, former Rivers State Governor Peter Odili, and the chairpersons of the PDP and the APC in Rivers, among others, according to a report by Premium Times.


During the meeting, Tinubu was said to be "very angry" with Governor Fubara, describing the demolition as a "desecration of democracy." Tinubu, known for his commitment to democratic values, expressed disbelief that a governor would demolish a "symbol of democracy" like the House of Assembly.


"I fought for democracy all my life," Tinubu reportedly said, expressing his dismay. He recounted an incident during his tenure as the governor of Lagos State when the state assembly stood against him, but he respected them and found common ground


The report also highlighted President Tinubu's reference to a past political disagreement in Lagos, indicating how he handled the situation with then-Governor Akinwunmi Ambode. Tinubu emphasized that he did not take the laws into his hands but waited for the election season for the "renewal of mandate."



The Rivers political crisis saw 25 lawmakers loyal to Governor Wike defecting from the PDP to the APC, the ruling party at the center. Subsequently, four lawmakers loyal to Fubara obtained a court order, enabling them to take control of the Rivers assembly.


On December 13, during Governor Fubara's presentation of the state's 2024 budget proposal to the four-member House of Assembly, the state government demolished the House of Assembly Complex, citing compromised integrity after an earlier explosion and fire incident in October.



President Tinubu's condemnation underscores the gravity of the situation, raising questions about the future of democracy in Rivers State amidst the ongoing political turmoil.

  Tinubu seeks support for varsities. President Bola Tinubu has called on stakeholders to join hands with the government in assisting universities in the country. The President noted that the education sector should not be left in the hands of the government alone, saying all stakeholders must develop the sector.
