 Neymar's Absence Confirmed: Ruled Out of 2024 Copa America Due to Lingering ACL Injury

Renowned footballer Neymar has officially been sidelined from the 2024 Copa America as he grapples with an ongoing recovery from a torn ACL, rendering him unable to participate in the tournament's commencement.


Dr. Rodrigo Lasmar, a member of the Brazilian national soccer team's medical team, revealed in an interview with Radio 98 that Neymar's ambitious attempt to return to competition by the start of next summer is impractical. Lasmar emphasized the importance of not rushing the recovery process, stating, "It's too early, there's no point skipping steps to recover. Our expectation is that Neymar will be prepared to return at the start of the 2024 European calendar, which is August."


Lasmar, who had previously addressed Neymar's injury approximately two months ago, underscored the severity of the situation. "This time it is the most serious injury, it takes more time, so we need him to be very focused and dedicated to recovery. He is following everything we propose."


The 31-year-old Neymar underwent a successful surgery on November 2 in Brazil to address ligaments and meniscus injuries in his left knee, sustained during the Selecao's 2026 World Cup qualifying loss to Uruguay in October.


Having transferred to Saudi Pro League club Al Hilal for £77.2 million ($98.3 million) from PSG in the summer, Neymar's absence is a significant blow to Brazil's squad. The star player, Brazil's all-time men's top scorer, has a history of injuries, including several right ankle and foot injuries that caused him to miss significant playing time in previous seasons, including Brazil's victorious Copa America campaign in 2019.



Neymar's dedication to recovery will be closely monitored, with hopes high for his return to the football pitch in the European calendar next August.
