Minister Edu and President Tinubu Address Irregular Migrants



 In a concerted effort to address economic challenges and job opportunities for Nigerian youths, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has passionately appealed to young Nigerians residing as irregular immigrants in various countries to return home. The call was made during the annual National Dialogue on Migration (NDM) at the Banquet Hall of the presidential villa in Abuja, marking the 2023 edition of International Migrants’ Day.



President Tinubu, represented by the Minister for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu, reiterated the core focus of his administration's Renewed Agenda—to spread economic prosperity, particularly to the youth and vulnerable populations. The plea comes as part of the global acknowledgment of December 18th as International Migrants Day by the United Nations General Assembly.


9ja headline habour reports that the President acknowledged the challenges faced by migrants and highlighted the theme of this year's Dialogue, "Leveraging on Youth Migration for National Development." Expressing concern about the recent upsurge in youth migration outside Nigeria, especially considering the majority are skilled individuals, President Tinubu emphasized the need to prevent the loss of critical human capital to perilous journeys.



Assuring the government's commitment to changing the narrative, President Tinubu emphasized that social and economic policies are geared toward improving general welfare, reducing extreme poverty, and generating employment for young graduates. He urged graduates to leverage government programs, particularly those promoting small and medium enterprises, emphasizing ongoing state-level initiatives focused on job creation.


The President called on all Nigerians to collaborate with the government in building a prosperous economy, highlighting the aim of creating a country where citizens have no reason to migrate through irregular means.



Earlier in the event, Hon. Aliyu Ahmed Tijani, the Federal Commissioner of the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons, revealed that the Commission successfully assisted in the reception of 4,500 voluntary and repatriated migrants from various countries. This week alone, 256 Nigerian migrants were received from Libya and Niger, with support from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and other stakeholders.



Goodwill messages from notable figures, including representatives of the Senate President, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Deputy Governor of Ebonyi State, German Ambassador, EU Representative, and Development Partners, echoed support for President Tinubu's stance on irregular migration."

  Tinubu seeks support for varsities. President Bola Tinubu has called on stakeholders to join hands with the government in assisting universities in the country. The President noted that the education sector should not be left in the hands of the government alone, saying all stakeholders must develop the sector. He made the call on Saturday, during his presidential address delivered at the 32nd Convocation of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Ondo State.
