INEC Performed Well In Spite Of Challenges  

The Coalition of United Political Parties (CUPP) has praised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for its handling of the recent off-cycle elections in Bayelsa, Imo, and Kogi States, despite the substantial challenges faced during the polls.

The coalition acknowledged the importance of commending the electoral body for its commendable performance, while also acknowledging past criticisms for lapses.

According to reports from various observer groups and Non-Governmental Organizations collaborating with CUPP across the three states, Kogi State exhibited the best conduct and outcome in the elections.

YIAGA Africa's reports aligned with INEC's declarations, affirming the credibility of the electoral process in Kogi.

During a press conference in Abuja, the CUPP leaders also expressed appreciation for the security agencies' swift actions in arresting individuals posing security threats during the elections.

They commended the agencies for resisting political actors' attempts to interfere with their constitutional duty of ensuring election security.

Barrister Emeka Igwe, representing the Steering Committee of CUPP, presented a communique acknowledging improvements in INEC's conduct of elections, especially in the early arrival of officials and materials at polling units.

The communique also highlighted concerns in Imo State, including allegations of voter intimidation, over-voting, vote buying, and security breaches, while emphasizing the need for thorough investigations to instill public confidence in the electoral process.

Regarding vote buying, the CUPP called for constitutional measures to eliminate this issue, emphasizing the importance of stringent criminalization and enforcement to discourage such behavior.

While acknowledging INEC's progress, the coalition emphasized that the responsibility for a free, fair, and credible election lies with everyone, urging INEC to continue improving in areas requiring attention.
